Bridges and railroads are in the crosshairs.
Russia may be preparing to mine bridges and railroads in different European Union countries. Russian agents are studying the said facilities to prepare for sabotage.
A top European intelligence agency official told Financial Times. According to him, the intelligence services of several states are monitoring Russian attempts to integrate highly skilled sleeper saboteurs into European countries.
Chatham House expert Keir Giles emphasized that the publicly known cases are only a small part of Russian activity, and its real scale is much larger.
"There are many more things that governments prefer not to talk about. It is pointless to call it something other than what it really is - a war against Europe," Keir Giles noted.
The FT emphasizes that Russian intelligence relies heavily on "battlefield reconnaissance" methods, which involves checking the enemy's weaknesses. This, according to experts, explains the wave of drone incursions into European countries.
At the same time, European officials fear that overreacting to hybrid attacks could favor Moscow's interests. Giles noted that assessing the actions of European states is valuable information for Russia, and a passive response only encourages the aggressor country to continue such operations.
Incidents that were previously treated as minor attacks are now perceived as significant security risks. As the publication notes, for the civilian population of countries such as Poland, the Russian Federation poses a threat comparable to terrorist threats of past decades.
