Merz: Elements Of Trump's New Strategy Are Unacceptable For Europe
Friedrich Merz

The German chancellor advised the US president to avoid amateurism.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that some parts of the US national security strategy are "unacceptable" from a European point of view. He said this while speaking during a visit to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, reports The Guardian.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reacted to recent statements by the US, particularly regarding its new national security strategy. He said he was not surprised by the strategy "in essence," linking it to Vice President J.D. Vance's Munich speech earlier this year. He said Vance made similar points when advocating an "America First" approach.

Merz said elements of the new U.S. national security strategy are unacceptable to the EU and advised President Donald Trump to avoid amateurishness.

"Some of it can be understood, some of it can be accepted, and some of it is unacceptable to us from a European point of view. It confirms my assessment that we in Europe, and therefore in Germany, have to become much more independent of the United States in terms of security policy," he said.

The Vloomberg journalists also added that Merz called the slogan "America First" legitimate. However, he said the slogan "America only" is not in the interests of the United States.

"You also need partners in the world, and one of those partners can be Europe. If you can't deal with Europe, at least make Germany your partner. That's what I'm trying to do," Merz said, referring to the U.S.

Merz said he hopes the Trump administration "recognizes that we are partners and that we have a common goal, which is to preserve freedom, security and peace on our continent."

Merz suggested that Vance's Munich speech helped push Germany toward a massive expansion of its armed forces.
