The Seventh UNESCO Intangible Heritage Site Appeared In Belarus

He requires immediate protection.

The Neglubian textile tradition from Vetkov district of Gomel region has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage requiring urgent protection, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry reports.

Neglubian weaving is known for its richness of colors and complexity of ornaments. In one rushnik, weavers can use up to twenty-five colors, creating multi-layered compositions based on more than one hundred and twenty traditional patterns. Many motifs are rooted in millennial symbolism and carry wishes of happiness, health, love and prosperity. The most recognizable elements are considered to be "krivuli", "spiders" and "apple tree" - geometric and vegetative images that have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries.

The peculiarity of the Neglubian tradition is that it has not turned into a museum piece. The products continue to be a part of everyday life of local residents, and the masters themselves actively teach young people, preserving the technique of hand weaving and embroidery.

With the inclusion of the Neglubian tradition, the number of Belarusian elements of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage has reached seven. In different years this list included "Kolyadnye tsars", Budslavsky fest, "Yurievsky round dance", culture of bortnichestvo, straw weaving and vytynanka. Now the unique textile craft of the Vetki district has joined them.
