Researchers Have Identified Six Key Strategies For Successful Aging

The most important things are self-determination, adaptability, and social connections.
A new international study has identified six essential components that people themselves consider key to "successful aging." Moving away from a view of old age as a period of inevitable decline, scientists suggest a more realistic and flexible approach, writes Psychology Today (translated by Charter97.org).
The study, conducted by Elyssa Burton's team at Curtin University (Australia) in 2024, involved nearly 2,000 participants from the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They were all asked one question, what successful aging means to them. The answers formed the basis of six key recommendations:
1. Being active and independent.
People associate successful aging with the ability to remain independent, enjoy life, pursue hobbies, plan for the future and stay professionally or volunteer.
2. Physical activity and wellness.
Regular exercise, mobility, energy and strength are among the most frequent criteria.
3. Resilience and acceptance.
It's about having a positive outlook on life, accepting age-related changes and being able to see new benefits, not just losses.
4. Social ties.
Support of family, friends, socializing with community, and the role of spirituality are important elements of subjective well-being.
5. Taking care of health.
People emphasize the importance of prevention, proper nutrition, and regular medical check-ups.
6. Mental health and cognitive clarity.
Many believe it is important to stay mentally active and emotionally stable.
Interestingly, most participants - about 80% - believe they are already aging successfully. The researchers note that unlike traditional models, which emphasized ideal physical health, the new understanding of successful aging is based on inner self-determination, adaptability and social inclusion.
To understand whether a person is well in old age, it is enough to ask him about it - and to age successfully yourself, it is important to follow these six directions.
