Russian Wagner PMC mercenaries in Mali, supporting Colonel Assimi Goita, who seized power in a coup, were caught in an ambush.
According to RFI, the Malian military and Wagner mercenaries were attacked by jihadists while escorting a column of gold miners. As a result of the shootout, more than 30 people, including military and civilians, were killed, and several army vehicles were destroyed.
According to French journalists, the attack occurred on February 7 on the road connecting Gao and Ansongo in the north of the country. The column that was attacked consisted of 22 minibuses, six large buses, eight trucks and was accompanied by about ten vehicles of the Malian army and Russian mercenaries.
The convoy was attacked near the village of Kobe, located 35 km from Gao. Armed men appeared on both sides of the road and opened fire indiscriminately on the convoy.
One of the eyewitnesses to the shootout said that the battle was brutal and lasted for several hours.
The convoy consisted mainly of gold prospectors. They were heading to a site near the Intahaka gold mine, a large artisanal gold exploration site. A year ago, it was reported that Russian mercenaries had captured this mine.
The Ansongo area frequently experiences attacks from jihadist groups, including ISIS. However, according to the newspaper, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the convoy attack.
