Trump Announces Introduction Of Large-Scale Tariffs

The restrictions will apply to imports of steel and aluminum to the United States.

US President Donald Trump announced his intention to introduce 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imported to the United States from other countries from February 10, Reuters reports.

In addition, Trump said that on February 11 or 12 he will announce the introduction of retaliatory tariffs against countries that apply tariffs on American goods. According to him, these measures will come into force almost immediately.

During his first presidential term, Trump already introduced tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum, but later granted some US trading partners — Canada, Mexico and Brazil — duty-free trade quotas. Trump's successor, Joe Biden, also extended these quotas to the UK, Japan and the European Union, Reuters recalls.

The largest suppliers of steel to the United States are Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Vietnam. Canada remains the leading exporter of primary aluminum, accounting for nearly 80% of total imports from January to November 2024. Mexico is the largest supplier of aluminum scrap and aluminum alloys.
