Macron: Trump Creates Window Of Opportunities

Now it is only Zelensky who can negotiate peace.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that only his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Zelensky can negotiate on behalf of his country with Russia to end the war. For this purpose, US President Donald Trump has already made efforts.

In a conversation with journalists of the American newspaper in the Elysee Palace, Macron expressed the opinion that Trump has created a ‘window of opportunities’ to end the large-scale military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine through negotiations, where ‘everyone must play their part’.

The French leader added that Zelensky should now discuss territorial and sovereignty issues.

Macron also warned that ‘a peace that is a surrender would be bad news for everyone, including the States.’

According to the French president, ‘the only question at this stage’ is whether Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is really ‘steadfastly and credibly willing to agree to a ceasefire on this basis.’ Macron also emphasised that after this, it is up to ‘the Ukrainians to negotiate with Russia’.

Speaking about security guarantees for Ukraine, the French president said that ‘the international community, with a special role for the Europeans, must discuss security guarantees and more broadly, a security framework for the entire region.’

‘This is where we must play our role,’ Macron added.

The French president also called Trump's return to the White House chair an ‘electric shock’ that should force Europe to secure its own future as well as that of Ukraine.

Macron reiterated his view that Europe must build up its defence capabilities so that it can act, even without the involvement of the US.

‘We must also develop a fully integrated European defence, industrial and technological base,’ he was convinced.
