Reuters: Kyiv, Its European Allies Oppose Russian Federation-U.S. ‘Dirty Deal’

The EU's top diplomat has reminded of the policy of ‘appeasing the aggressor’.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Ukraine will participate in peace talks with Russia. As Reuters notes, Trump made the announcement after Kyiv and its European allies warned against a ‘dirty deal’ (Reuters quote) between Washington and Moscow following Trump's phone call with Russian President Putin.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump emphasised that Ukraine would take a place at the negotiating table with Russia regarding the end of the war.

Asked if he trusts Putin, the US president said, ‘I believe that we would like to see something happen. I trust him on that issue.’

Reuters notes that Russia's financial markets have started to rise, just as the cost of the Ukrainian debt has risen on the prospect of the first talks in years to end Europe's deadliest war since World War II.

European representatives took an exceptionally tough public stance on Trump's peace proposal, saying any agreement would be impossible to realise unless they and the Ukrainians were included in the talks.

‘Any quick fix is a dirty deal,’ said European foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. She also condemned the apparent concessions offered in advance [even before the talks began].

‘Why are we offering them (Russia) whatever they want even before the talks start?’ Kallas asked rhetorically. ‘It's appeasement. It has never brought results,‘ the European Union's top diplomat emphasised, thus reminding us of the ‘policy of appeasing the aggressor’ in the run-up to the outbreak of World War II.’

A source in European diplomatic circles told Reuters that the ministers intend to engage in a ‘frank and demanding dialogue’ with US officials in Munich. The agency points out that such language is among the strongest expressions in the diplomatic lexicon.

The annual Munich Security Conference will open on Friday, 14 February.
