Russia’s Only Aircraft Carrier Admiral Kuznetsov May Never Sail Again

Huge funds were spent on its repairs.

The Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, which has been under repair for 7 years, may never be repaired and go to sea. The Su-33 fighters, which were part of the ship's air group, are now used by the aggressor country to escort the Tu-95MS strategic bombers.

Defence Express reported.

The profile publication drew attention to the fact that some Russian pilots who are able to take off from the deck of an aircraft carrier are already retired, while others perform "significantly easier flights from land", and they need to be trained again to develop take-off and landing skills on the deck. Such a re-transition requires one year.

At the same time, the Admiral Kuznetsov carrier is the only one that Russia has, respectively, for the propaganda of the aggressor country, this ship is of great importance, and "therefore the Russians spend huge funds on its restoration and early commissioning."

Also, Defence Express notes that Russia planned to withdraw the Kuznetsov from repair last year, and the Kremlin media wrote about the beginning of the process of training pilots for these aircraft.

At the same time, the only training ground for such training is located near the occupied city of Saki in the Crimea. Therefore, the Su-33 aircraft would have to be there. However, it turned out that these fighters do not undergo training, but are still in the north of Russia, and accompany the Tu-95MS from the Olenya airfield in the Murmansk region.

According to media reports, the Russian Federation has only about 17 Su-33s, and all these fighters were previously part of the Admiral Kuznetsov air group. At the same time, at the end of 2023, it turned out that such aircraft were written off ashore to form a separate mixed air corps for the Northern Fleet.

According to the Defence Express editorial board, this, in particular, hinted at the "real state" of the aircraft carrier.

The profile publication concluded that the Russian authorities "will continue to make money" on the repair of the aircraft carrier, and the Admiral Kuznetsov carrier itself will continue to rust in the docks against the background of the real pace of repairs and new problems with the ship that arise. Therefore, the Russian aircraft carrier "is unlikely to ever come out of repair."
