AFU Counteroffensive: Ukrainian Army Advances Deep Into Kursk Region

ISW analysts have published a map of military operations.

Ukrainian armed forces have launched a new counter-offensive in Kursk region and advanced five kilometres deep into the region within a day. This is stated in the report of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) for 6 February.

‘Ukrainian forces launched a new series of battalion-sized mechanised attacks in Kursk region and advanced up to five kilometres deep into Russian positions southeast of Sudzha on February 6,’ the report reads.

Analysts explained that geolocation footage indicates that the Ukrainian army advanced southwest of Makhnovka and north and east of Cherkasskaya Konopelka along Route 38K-028 Sudzha-Oboyan.

In addition, according to ISW, the AFU occupied the Kolmakov farm and the village of Fanseevka in Kursk Region.

At the same time, the Russian Defence Ministry said that Ukrainian forces attacked in several waves in the direction of Cherkasskaya Konopelka and Ulanok using armoured vehicles with forces of up to two mechanised battalions, and that Russian troops repelled the attack.

A Russian military blogger also claimed that Ukrainian forces had captured Cherkasskaya Konopelka, while some Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces had broken through to or even captured the village of Ulanok.

‘ISW has not yet seen geolocation evidence to assess that Ukrainian forces are operating in Ulanok,’ the report said.

ISW also noted that it has no basis so far to claim Ukrainian activity near the village of Kruglenkoe, which has also been claimed by Russian military bloggers.

The Institute noted that the main forces of the Russian Armed Forces defending against Ukrainian attacks southeast of Sudzha are now units of the Russian 11th Airborne Brigade, the 810th Marine Infantry Brigade (Black Sea Fleet), 30th Motorised Rifle Regiment (72nd Motorised Rifle Division of the 44th Army Corps of the Leningrad Military District and 177th Marine Infantry Regiment (Caspian Flotilla), as well as Chechen Akhmat drone operators.
