This is happening against the background of aggravation of relations with Azerbaijan.
Russia is building up its military presence in Armenia amid tensions with Azerbaijan. In particular, the Kremlin has stepped up the staffing of its military base in the city of Gyumri in order to increase military and political pressure on the countries of the South Caucasus.
This is reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
According to the GSD, the military base is recruiting servicemen from the Russian Armed Forces, who are currently serving in Rostov and Volgograd regions, as well as on the territory of temporarily occupied Crimea.
In addition, the Russian command is actively recruiting volunteers in the North Caucasus, particularly in North Ossetia and Adygea.
"The deployment of Russian troops in Armenia is an element of the Kremlin's comprehensive strategy aimed at destabilizing the global security situation. Along with fomenting inter-ethnic conflict, Moscow is building up its military presence in the Caucasus. Probably, the deterioration of relations between Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation was prepared in advance," said Defense Ministry GUR spokesman Andrey Yusov.
