The US is ready to impose restrictive measures.
US President Donald Trump has confirmed that his special envoy Steve Whitkoff will travel to Russia this week. During a conversation with reporters, he noted that Steve Whitkoff could visit Russia on Wednesday or Thursday.
"He'll probably go, I think next week, Wednesday or Thursday, probably go to Russia. They would like to see him. They've asked that he meet and we'll see what happens," Trump said.
The American leader also reiterated that sanctions would be imposed if Russia rejects a ceasefire in Ukraine before the deadline. At the same time, he noted that the Russians know how to circumvent the restrictions.
"There will be sanctions, but they seem to be pretty good at avoiding sanctions. You know, they're crafty characters and they're pretty good at avoiding sanctions, so we'll see what happens," the US president added.
Answering a question about what Steve Whitkoff's message to the Russian side will be and whether a waiver of sanctions is still possible, Trump noted that it is necessary to make an agreement that can stop the loss of life.
He recalled that data on significant losses among the Russian military, as well as thousands of dead Ukrainians, were recently made public.
