Trump Will Posthumously Award Slain Associate With Top U.S. Honor
Charlie Kirk

Prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed at an event at Utah Valley University.

US President Donald Trump will posthumously award his slain fellow political activist Charlie Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the head of state said at the start of a speech at the Pentagon to mark the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. He added that the date would be announced soon.

"Charlie was an extraordinary man of his generation, a freedom fighter and an inspiration to millions and millions of people," the US president said.

The head of state expressed confidence that "Charlie's voice and the courage he instilled in the hearts of people, especially young people, will live on."

Riding back to the White House after his speech, Trump told reporters that he planned to speak to Kirk's family later on Thursday.

The day before, Kirk, 31, was injured during a speech at Debtor's University Trump later said Kirk had died.

The FBI said a rifle believed to have been used in the shooting was found. It and three unused cartridges inside were engraved with statements of "anti-fascist ideology," The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a source. The weapon was found in the woods and was wrapped in a towel.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is one of the two highest U.S. awards for civilians, given by decision of the head of state. It was established by the 33rd President Harry Truman in 1945 to reward service during World War II.
