Poland expects clear international solidarity.
The U.N. Security Council will hold an extraordinary meeting Friday to discuss an incident in Polish airspace where nearly two dozen drones intruded on Wednesday. The Polish president called it an attempt by Russia to test the reaction of Warsaw and NATO.
Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski explained that the main goal is to "draw the attention of the whole world to the unprecedented attack by Russian drones on a state that is a member not only of the United Nations, but also of the European Union and NATO."
The convening of the UN Security Council meeting is a signal that Poland expects clear international solidarity. As experts emphasize, this is not just a security issue for one country, but for the entire North Atlantic Alliance. Violating Poland's airspace means violating NATO's borders.
These Russian actions are aimed at testing the West's ability to respond. In practice, they may also be an attempt to cause anxiety in the region and demonstrate the limitations of air defense systems.
Polish aviation, assisted by NATO forces, shot down several of the 19 drones that flew into Poland - the first time the North Atlantic Alliance has deployed its armed forces since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
