Trump's Son To Build Tower In Tbilisi With Financier Of Georgia's Shadow Leader

New details about the project have emerged.

The sons of U.S. President Donald Trump are launching a new development project in Georgia - Trump Tower Tbilisi, a 70-story luxury residential complex that is set to become the tallest building in the country, writes The Daily Beast. The project was announced earlier this week by Eric Trump and published an image of the future tower in X.

In a press release to mark the launch of Trump Tower Tbilisi, Eric Trump said, "The Trump name is associated with some of the most luxurious development projects in the world, and Trump Tower Tbilisi continues that continuity. We are proud to bring this globally recognized standard of excellence to Georgia and are especially pleased to partner with such respected and professional developers." According to The Daily Beast, one of the Trump family's partners in the project was Tbilisi-based Archi Group, which is linked to Georgian billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili. Ivanishvili, founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, has been called Georgia's "shadow ruler" by critics. He came under U.S. sanctions under former U.S. President Joe Biden for undermining democratic procedures during elections.

Archi Group has ties to Ivanishvili's entourage. The company's founder Iliya Tsulaia is a former MP from Ivanishvili's party. As the publication notes, last year his name appeared on a list of candidates for US sanctions, which US lawmakers handed to current Secretary of State Marco Rubio. However, no sanctions were imposed against Tsulai.

According to Transparency International's 2019 report, Archi Group received about $7.2 million in funding from Georgian authorities to build a concrete block factory in Tbilisi. These payments came between 2016 and 2018, when Tsulaia himself and his partners donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the ruling party and Ivanishvili-friendly politicians.

This is not the first attempt by the Trump family to build a project in the Georgian market. Back in 2012, Trump announced plans to build a luxury residential complex in Batumi, but abandoned the project after winning the 2016 elections. Later, the project was taken over by an investment fund linked to Ivanishvili.

The second company involved in the construction of Trump Tower Tbilisi is New York-based Sapir Organization. It was founded by the late businessman Tamir Sapir, a former Trump associate. The current head of the company, Alex Sapir, told the WSJ that the Georgia project was an opportunity to "make a meaningful contribution" to the country where his late father was born. Tamir Sapir emigrated to the U.S. in the mid-1970s and opened an electronics store in Manhattan with Odessa native Semyon Kislin. Donald Trump was one of Sapir and Kislin's first customers, The Daily Beast reported.
