Politico: Britain Wants To Return To The EU Market

How did Brussels react to Starmer's proposal?

The European Union has rejected the UK's proposal to create a joint format of the single market for goods. Brussels said it would maintain the current approaches to regulating cooperation despite London's intentions to strengthen economic integration, Politico reported.

The initiative on the part of the UK came amid the domestic political situation in the country. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated his intention to strengthen the country's role in the European context and strengthen foreign policy positions.

The new proposal was presented by the chief Brexit negotiator Michael Ellam. He visited Brussels, where he discussed the possibility of deepening cooperation between the parties.

The European side, however, did not support the proposed initiative. According to sources, London was ready to partially reconsider the previous restrictions in relations, but it was not enough to change the EU's position.

Almost ten years have passed since Britain's exit from the EU. Now the sides continue to revise the format of interaction and are preparing for the next summit to be held in the coming weeks. London insists on expanding trade cooperation, but Brussels maintains a cautious approach.

It is noted that the focus of the talks is on sectoral issues, in particular food, agriculture and energy. The European Commission refrains from detailed comments on trade proposals and emphasizes the priority of other areas of cooperation.

The European Commission has so far remained silent on trade and is focused specifically on protecting Ukraine.

"We also see opportunities to deepen cooperation where it is most important now," the newspaper's interlocutors say. Thus, Brussels makes it clear: security and politics are now the priority, while the UK's economic privileges will have to wait.

So Brussels emphasizes that the current focus is on other political and security issues, while economic initiatives remain subject to further negotiations.

It is also noted that the EU does not rule out deeper integration in the future, but on tougher terms. Public polls in the UK show growing support for the idea of rapprochement with the EU in the long term.
