Time: Ukraine Managed To Find Trump Cards To Win Without The U.S.

David versus Goliath.

U.S. President Donald Trump has bragged about cutting off all financial aid to Ukraine and tried to force it to capitulate on terms that many consider favorable to Russian Federation. However, as Time writes, Ukraine has proven it doesn't need it.

15 months ago in the Oval Office, Trump told Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky:

"You're in a bad position. Right now you don't have maps. With us, you will have cards."

To which Zelensky replied, "I don't play cards. I am very serious, Mr. President. I am very serious... Of course, we want to stop the war. But I told you: with guarantees."

Drone warfare as Ukraine's new advantage

As Time notes, Zelensky's resolve over the past year has been sound. Ukraine has found some winning cards thanks to its ingenuity in drone technology and the shaky economy of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, despite high oil and gas prices and an unwise easing of U.S. energy sanctions against Russia that gave Moscow a temporary respite.

On the battlefield, drones have come in handy for Ukraine in three ways. First, they effectively strike deep inside Russia, penetrating supply lines, energy infrastructure and munitions factories; second, they save Ukrainian lives by reducing the number of troops at risk; and third, they undermine Russian arrogance and confidence," the piece adds.

Some question whether this is a sustainable advantage, but senior sources in the Biden and Trump administrations report that Ukrainian drone and anti-drone defense technology relies heavily on U.S. technology that Russia does not have access to.

"All of this suggests that Ukraine's technological, innovation, and cost advantages are sustainable. In fact, it is reported that the US has funneled billions of dollars in direct investment into the Ukrainian drone industry under both Biden and Trump," Time emphasizes.

At the same time, former national security adviser to US President Joe Biden, Jake Sullivan, commenting on Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia, noted:

"There is clearly something going on with the Russian authorities and intelligence services. They are under pressure to take tough measures against the internet and popular messengers."

The publication adds that Ukraine has seized the strategic initiative, gaining the ability to strike deep into Russian Federation, exposing the fragility of Putin's "house of cards" as Moscow loses its army, cedes ground and tries to create at least the illusion of strength for its wary allies.

"It also confirms Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's warning that a third polarity is emerging, where the European Union, Britain and Canada are firmly on the side of Ukrainian ingenuity, while Trump's priorities are shifting in the other direction," the piece emphasized.

The David and Goliath metaphor

In addition, Time mentioned a biblical story in 1 Samuel, chapter 17, where Goliath was a giant who terrorized Israel and the entire army of King Saul. David, despite being considerably shorter than Goliath, refused the heavy weapons and armor that King Saul offered him.

"He moved to meet the mocking giant Goliath, armed only with a shepherd's staff, a leather sling, and five smooth stones. David killed Goliath by hitting him in the forehead with a stone from the sling. Considering that Russia is 28 times the size of Ukraine, but about 60% covered with uninhabitable permafrost, and is by no means an economic superpower, we may be witnessing a modern reinterpretation of this biblical saga. Even more striking is the fact that David has overcome so many obstacles by this point," the publication compares.

At the same time, retired Lieutenant General and former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Doug Lute emphasized:

"The United States, especially under Trump, but to some extent also under Biden, pushed David into battle against Goliath with one hand tied behind his back and contributed to David being forced to continue this unequal struggle for more than four years."
