According to NATO Maritime Command, the Russian ship was escorted by the Portuguese frigate NRP Dom Francisco de Almeida and a Merlin Mk2 helicopter from the British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales.
The Yuri Ivanov reconnaissance vessel is designed to collect signals intelligence and monitor the activity of NATO fleets. Its appearance near the Alliance's forces came shortly after the end of Russian nuclear exercises in the Barents Sea, during which ballistic and cruise missiles were launched.
