Details of the phone conversation became known.
Emmanuel Macron has directly warned Alexander Lukashenko about the consequences of getting involved in Russia's military aggression against Ukraine. This is the first known telephone contact between the politicians in more than four years, which took place against the backdrop of the escalating situation in the region and the deployment of advanced nuclear weapons.
The details of the unexpected telephone conversation between Paris and Minsk were published by the AFP news agency.
Emmanuel Macron clearly outlined the risks for Belarus should it continue to allow itself to be drawn into the Russian war. In addition, the French leader urged Alexander Lukashenko to take the necessary steps to improve relations between Belarus and Europe.
This is the first publicly confirmed conversation between the two heads of state since February 2022, when Russian troops used Belarusian territory to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Official Minsk, for its part, limited itself to a very modest message. The press service of the Belarusian politician confirmed only the fact of discussing regional problems and the fact that it was the French side that initiated the call.
The diplomatic move by the Elysee Palace was a reaction to the unprecedented military tension of recent weeks, which is emphasized by the authors of the English-language article. Back in early May, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky ordered the border with Belarus in the north to be reinforced, saying Moscow was preparing a new offensive from that direction, although the Kremlin denied the allegations. A further escalation occurred on May 18, when Russia and Belarus held joint nuclear exercises, a kind of response to the increasing number of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory.
The agency emphasizes the geopolitical danger of the moment: Belarus, which borders NATO's eastern flank, is now home to Russia's newest Iskander missile systems capable of carrying nuclear charges.
The French president's conversation with Lukashenko coincided with another round of aggression, as just on Sunday Russia used this hypersonic ballistic missile for the third time during the war in a massive strike that caused widespread destruction in Kiev.
