The U.S. Army abruptly relieved Lieutenant General Charles Costanza of his command; he had headed the U.S. Army’s V Corps and was responsible for coordinating military operations in Europe. He was dismissed nearly two months before the end of his scheduled term, according to ABC News.
A U.S. Army spokesperson confirmed Costanza’s removal. However, the specific reasons for this decision have not yet been disclosed.
Constanza had led the V Corps since April 2024. According to the U.S. Army, his duties are being temporarily performed by Brigadier General John B. Mountford, the corps’ deputy commander for combat readiness.
Major General Thomas Felty was slated to replace Costanza as commander of the V Corps. His nomination had already been confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and the transfer of command was scheduled for October. In other words, Costanza’s removal occurred earlier than the scheduled rotation.
At the same time, a source familiar with the situation stated that the decision is not related to large-scale personnel changes in the top U.S. military leadership and has no political undertones.
Why the V Corps Is Important for Europe
The V Corps plays a key role in commanding U.S. ground forces and coordinating military operations across Europe.
The corps is partially based in Poland and has taken on even greater significance since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It helps coordinate U.S. military support for Ukraine and is responsible for the U.S. military presence on NATO’s eastern flank.
This is precisely why the sudden removal of its commander drew attention amid changes in Washington’s military policy toward Europe.
Large-scale personnel reshuffles continue in the U.S.
Costanza’s removal took place against the backdrop of broader reshuffles in the top U.S. military leadership under Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset.
During this period, more than two dozen high-ranking officers were dismissed or suspended from duty. In many cases, the Pentagon did not publicly explain the reasons for these decisions.
However, a source familiar with Kostantsa’s dismissal claims that his case is not related to the general reorganization of the Army’s leadership.
