U.S. Democrats are preparing a sweeping strategy to investigate President Donald Trump if they gain control of the House of Representatives after the November election.

According to four sources familiar with the discussions, Democrats are considering using Congress’s powers to hold hearings, issue subpoenas, and obtain documents from companies and financial institutions linked to Trump.

Why Democrats Are Not Rushing to Impeach

The party believes that wide-ranging investigations may be more effective than an immediate attempt to remove the president through impeachment. Democrats fear that such a procedure would immediately turn into the main political battle in Washington and allow Trump to portray himself as a victim of partisan strife.

They want to first gather evidence of the administration’s decisions and examine whether the president may have used his powers to benefit himself, his allies, or his donors.

“We’re not embarking on this with the goal of impeachment,” said one senior Democratic aide. “No one wants the vote to fail on the very first day. The main focus is on gathering evidence through investigations that will allow Trump to be held accountable.”

What They Want to Investigate

According to Reuters sources, Democrats may focus on Department of Homeland Security contracts, corporate donors, funding for Trump’s planned White House ballroom, and possible “pay-to-play” schemes.

Separately, there are plans to examine financial structures linked to the president’s family. These include the venture capital firm 1789 Capital, in which Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. is a partner, as well as possible investments by foreign sovereign wealth funds in entities linked to the president’s family.

Major U.S. companies may also come under scrutiny. Sources have named Apple, Alphabet, Palantir, Blackstone, BlackRock, and Elon Musk’s companies, particularly Tesla. At the same time, there is no definitive list of potential targets for investigation yet, and no official investigations into these companies have been launched.

Democrats Are Already Laying the Groundwork

According to two sources, Democrats have already begun sending letters to companies, contractors, and other organizations requesting information. In this way, they hope to obtain documents in advance that may become the subject of formal congressional requests in the future.

Specifically, the requests concern the media company Paramount Skydance’s interactions with the Trump administration, agreements between YouTube and Alphabet and the president, contracts between private companies and the Department of Homeland Security, as well as deals involving Venezuelan oil.

Democratic representatives Robert Garcia and Jamie Raskin stated that ongoing investigations will be expanded if the party wins a majority in the House of Representatives.

Impeachment remains an option

Democrats have not ruled out the possibility of impeaching Trump in the future. However, according to sources, it could only be the next step if the investigation uncovers evidence of violations that could serve as grounds for removing the president.

This approach is also linked to the experience of Trump’s first presidential term. The House of Representatives has impeached him twice, but the Senate has acquitted the president each time.

“If the investigation uncovers evidence that, in our view, meets the necessary criteria, we will not hesitate to move forward,”,” added a senior Democratic aide.

Therefore, this is not about a pre-determined impeachment process, but rather about preparing large-scale investigations that could create more serious political problems for Trump after the November election.
