Does Russia’s Ambassador Foretell “Union Referendum”?

2

After the Russian presidential elections, which are scheduled for March 2008, the work on the Constitution Act of the “union state” will continue, said Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Alexander Surikov told a press conference in Minsk on February 11.

Alexander Surikov believes that the main objective of the constitutional act of the “union state” which couldn’t have been adopted for many years is forming of a legal space where national and “union” interests won’t clash, Interfax informs.

As said by the Ambassador, all changes in the “union state” should be carried out through national constitutions, so that “national” and “union” interests won’t clash. And with the introduction of the “union state” authority the Constitution will have to be changed. To change the Constitution, both in Belarus and in Russia, a referendum has to be held and all other things connected with it.

Besides, he added that Belarus and Russia are completing working out the laws that regulate “union state” property.
