Activists of the Union of Poles in Belarus are still persecuted.

On Saturday, 150-200 people, associates of Anzhalika Borys, head of the Union of Poles, unrecognized by the Belarusian authorities, gathered near the building of the Union of Poles at intersection of Dzerzhinsky and September 17 Streets in Hrodna on Saturday. People were indignation because they couldn’t enter the building of the Union of Poles, which contraction was financed by the Polish government. The action lasted for an hour and a half, Radio Svaboda reports.

Activists of the Union of Poles began to break up at midday, after deputy head of the Union of Poles Mechyslau Yaskevich read out a letter of Uladzimir Lameka, deputy executive for religious and national affairs at the Council of Ministers of Belarus. The letter was sent to Anzhalika Borys, she was offered to present her written proposals on regulation of the conflict around the Union of Poles, lasted since spring 2008.

Associates of Anzhalika Borys gathered near the union building, because she was invited (for the first time) for a session of the official Union of Poles, headed by Jozef Lucznik , not as am organization head but as a common citizen. Anzhalika Borys refused to take part in the session of the pro-governmental organization on such conditions.

“It is a great honour that Borys came to speak with supporters of Lucznik, who are protected by militia,” the mob said and demanded that Lucznik should leave the building.

Finally, head of the official Union of Poles in Belarus came out to people and said a session of the main council of the organization would be held in the building of the Union of Poles. The council is to discuss a question on a calling of a congress. He noted Anzhalika Borys had been invited for the session, but she hadn’t come. The people were displeased to hear Lucznik addressing them in Russian, not in Polish. They began to chant “Shame!” Lucznik returned to the building, no one from people gathered was allowed in the House of Poles. Militiaman and people in mufti were seen in the building and outside, they also protected the doors of the building of the Union of Poles.
