Charges filed against Iryna Khalip

Now the well-known journalist is under arrest.

“Narodnaya Volya” has been informed about that by her father, a film-maker and community worker Uladzimir Khalip.

“Iryna was visited by her lawyer both on Wednesday and Thursday,” Mr Khalip said. “She was interrogated again. As said by the lawyer, Iryna is charged under Article 293 – organization of mass riots and participation in mass riots. Iryna said to the lawyer that she writes letters every day, but we have received only one letter from her so far. Others have not been received – a total blockage is taking place. We have information that Andrei Sannikov also writes letters, but his messages are not received by us either…”

Uladzimir Khalip does not believe that his daughter would be released under a written undertaking not to leave the place or on bail soon.

“This phantasm of a hope has vanished already,” he said. “After December 19 the country has changed. And not for the better…”

We remind that the former president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev and the Human Rights Commissioner of Russia Vladimir Lukin. Besides, several international organizations demand release of the journalist.
