Lukashenka will not get IMF loan

The EU member states may opt not to support issuing an IMF loan to Belarus due the current political situation in the country.

The information leaked on May 13 from a source close to the European Commission, Regnum information agency reports.

The source said concerning a possible voting of IMF board of directors to grant a credit to Belarus that the EU would find it hard to make steps toward Belarus if the country stayed in a situation when there are a great number of political prisoners in Belarus, as it is seen today.

The source notes that the EU would like to help Belarus, because the situation in the country is very difficult today, but it needs to receive clear signals from Belarus regarding the situation with political prisoners.

According to the source, the EU has frozen the expansion of the mandate of the European Investment Bank in Belarus because of the political situation in the country. "In case with the bank, mandate is given by the EU," said the source.
