The United States negotiates with “a broad variety of states” on the Belarusian issue.
The UN Human Rights Council is expected to adopt a resolution on the situation in the country, Esther Brimmer, the assistant secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, says in her report, Radio Svaboda informs.
United States Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe made a statement on Wednesday expressing concern of the United States about “violent repression of peaceful protests in some countries around the world”.
Chamberlain, in particular, reminded that the Belarusian authorities “sentenced three opposition presidential candidates to prison, and given two more suspended sentences. At least 38 other opposition activists were tried and convicted in trials that failed to meet even the most minimal standards required of a fair and independent judiciary.”
“Governments must be held accountable for violation of the fundamental freedoms of association, expression, religion, and speech of their citizens,” the US Ambassador to the HRC said.
