Friends,

In view of constant attacks on our website and problems with access to it, we are seriously considering opportunities to change the way of our work. We were advised to use social networks, popular blogging platforms, spread news via rss and email, use torrents. We follow the latest tendencies, look at new opportunities and have tried different variants since 2001.

In our opinion, the value of the website is that it is a uniting mobilizing core and a point of entry for a great number of our readers and everyone who wants to hear views alternative to official propaganda, but the site cannot pretend to absolute objectivity and information monopoly. An attempt to be everywhere and for everyone is utopian and not efficient. The value of the Internet is that it offers people a choice: you can choose a source of information you trust, but you also have an opportunity to spread information who find important.

Dictatorship is afraid of free information as well as of symbols that personify it. We may seem not humble, but our website has become that symbol for Belarusian Internet users. That’s why it is our website that faces the most furious attacks. If we give up this model of work and distribute our efforts among social networks and low traffic services, we will do the dictatorship a great favour. Our small team does not have time and forces to be everywhere, but this is not needed. There are plenty of talented people on the Belarusian Internet who do this better than we, as the events with the recent protest actions showed. Join the general struggle, take responsibility on yourself, create own websites, groups, communities, news feeds.

In our turn, we will do our best to preserve charter97.org on the Belarusian Internet. Our website will live. To be closer to you, we have created groups and accounts on all services popular among Belarusians. We will use them not to repeat news from the website, but to tell about the most important events and life of our site.
