Norwegian Christian Democrats: Pressure on Lukashenka should be stepped up

Christian Democrats of Norway urge the government of their country to step up pressure on Lukashenka.

As informed by the press-service of the Belarusian Christian Democratic party, freezing of the Belarusian Christian Democratic party registration is a sure sign that Lukashenka fears political opposition, and especially an opposition which had demonstrated an ability to mobilize people. It was stated by Dagfinn Høybråten, the former leader of the Christian Democratic Party and a Member of Parliament.

“Christian Democrats are supported by active believers in the country, and it is possibly viewed as a danger,” Høybråten said.

He believes that at the moment “all forces of the good will” should stimulate Belarus to respect of the basic human rights.

Recently Mr Høybråten asked Jonas Gahr Stør, the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, a question in written form: what initiatives are undertaken by the government to make the Belarusian authorities stop threats to their political opponents? In his answer the Foreign Affairs Minister assured that Norway joined the decision of the EU to impose tougher sanctions against Belarus. The Foreign Affairs Minister noted that Norway still takes a tough stance on Belarus at international forum such as the Council of Europe and the OSCE, as well as in immediate relations with Belarus.
