Maja Concijancic: EU does not forget about Belarus

Brussels is concerned about the recent cases of restricting the freedom to travel for opposition and civil society representatives by the Belarusian authorities.

This opinion was expressed by Maja Concijancic, the spokesperson for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, Radio Svaboda reports.

"In terms of our policy, we have made it very clear -- the policy is very principled,” Maja Cocijancic said adding that any crackdown on opposition and civil society representatives should be stopped. She stressed people should not be restricted in the freedom of movement.

Kacijancic reminded the situation in Belarus would be discussed at a meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers on March 23.

“We have been looking and are continuing to follow this very closely. Belarus will again e on the agenda of the Foreign Affairs Council next week when the ministers meet on Friday, March 23. And they will look into further restrictive measures as an important instrument of pressure on Belarusian authorities.”
