EU ambassadors to return to Belarus in nearest time

The ambassadors of the EU countries may return to Belarus in the nearest days.

This statement was made today in Brussels by Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák, Radio Svaboda reports:

“It's time for the ambassadors to return, because we need them to do their work. They should not be an element of a political dispute between the EU and Belarus. However, the EU was rather noble agreeing to a imbalance in favour of Belarus – our ambassadors left Belarus, but Belarusian ambassadors remained in their countries. By this means we wanted to say we are not interested in escalation of the situation. At the same time it's clear the situation cannot last long. We have a small positive move. The release of Sannikov and Bandarenka is very important, but it is a first step on a long road...

Ambassadors are not politicians. We should not make it a political issue. The less attention media pay to and the less political emphasis is laid on the return of ambassadors, the better it is for our goals in Belarus. There's no reason to wait. I think it happens in a matter of days.”
