Vouchak to appeal against illegal arrest: “Cold, dirt, insanitary conditions”

A lawyer visited human rights activist Aleh Vouchak in a detention centre on Akrestin Street on may 29.

As result of the meeting, Aleh Vouchak filed an appeal to the Minsk city court against the decision of the Tsentralny district court that sentenced the human rights defender to 9 days in custody for “swearing in public”.

“Belorusski Partizan” learned from Raisa Mikailouskaya, the head of the Centre for Human Rights, “conditions in the detention centre did not changed in comparison with his previous term in custody in January.  Cold, dirt and insanitary conditions. Aleh cannot eat prison porridge.” Mikhailouskaya  is confident that “Vouchak will serve the whole term” and the sentence will not be overturned.

On May 24, the Tsentralny district court of Minsk sentenced Aleh Vouchak, the head of Kyiv-based centre “Legal Assistance to Citizens”, to 9 days in custody for swearing (article 17.1 of the Code of Administrative Offences – disorderly conduct).

As in case of the arrest in January 2012, Aleh Vouchak was detained on the street, accused of swearing, tired and thrown into a detention centre.
