Kavalenka's wife wants medical examination for her husband

Alena Kavalenka appealed to the Corrections Department asking to send her husband for a medical examination.

She refers to the information about Syarhei Kavalenka's illness caused by long hunger strikes and says he has not received proper treatment yet, Radio Svaboda reports.

“He should undergo tests and have his kidney and heart examined first of all. He has edemas. It means his health  worsened. His recovery after the hunger strike did not comply with norms; it was held outside hospital, without medical treatment,” Alena Kavalenka says.

Syarhei Kavalenka, an activist of CCP/BPF party, was sentenced to 13 months in a penal colony for violation of the rules of a suspended sentence he received for hanging out a national white-red-white flag on a Christmas Tree in Vitebsk. He was tried in December 2011. Before being placed in a penal colony in Mahilou in late April, Syarhei Kavelenka went on three hunger strikes.

In spring, Syarhei Kavalenka was taken to a special department of a psychiatric hospital for a month. He was recognized sane. The Vitebsk region court dismissed Syarhei Kavalenka's appeal against the judgement.

Syarhei Kavalenka is reported to have been moved from a quarantine cell to barracks. It may be sent to work in the colony.
