Alena Kavalenka applies to Red Cross for help

Alena Kavalenka has applied to the Belarus Red Cross Society for help. She wants to pass medicines to her imprisoned husband.

Syarhei Kavalenka's wife, Alena, was told in penal colony No. 19 in Mahilou her husband had been released from a punishment cell on June 28 after 10 days of punishment. Alena managed to pass a parcel to her husband, but she failed to hand in medicines. Alena Kavalenka talked to medical unit chief Byarsenyeu, but didn't get permission to pass drugs.

“Syarhei is not allowed to receive medicines and vitamins he needs after hunger strikes,” Alena Kavalenka says.

The woman applied to the Belarus Red Cross Society for help.

“I was in Minsk yesterday and filed an application to the Red Cross Society asking for their assistance to pass medicines to him. My application was accepted and a staff member promised to send it to the penal colony,” the women told Radio Svaboda.

CCP/BPF party activist Syarhei Kavalenka was sentenced to 25 months in prison for hanging out a national white-red-white flag on a Christmas Tree in Vitebsk.
