Young democrats: We believe in UFO (Photo)

Young activists of UCP handed out flyers in Brest to highlight their concerns about the country’s electoral procedures.

The flyers read, “We believe in UFO, vampires, Santa Claus… and fair elections in 2012.”

Violations were recorded at most polling stations in the Brest region where independent observers monitored the voting in the December 2010 presidential election, Uladzimir Vuyek, chairman of the UCP’s regional organization, told BelaPAN.

“Election officials did not allow our observers to take part in the counting of votes or even get closer to the desk where it was happening,” said the activist. “They refused to provide the voter lists or information on the number of blank ballots and the number of those who had voted early. After Lidziya Yarmoshyna, head of the central election commission, announced that people who had proved themselves in the previous election campaign would be given seats on the local election commissions in the 2012 parliamentary elections, it has become obvious that no fair elections will be held in Belarus this time, too.”
