Lukashenka-style “election” begins

Policemen burst into a flat of Viktar Karnyaenka, a co-chairman of the campaign “For Free Elections”.

Karnyaenka is reported to be on visit to Vienna, where a Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting on Democratic Elections and Election Observation opens  tomorrow. The meeting will be attended by head of the Belarusian Central Election Commission (CEC) Lidzia Yarmoshyna, Viasna human rights centre reports.

As there is no information about involvement of Karnyaenka in any criminal cases, human rights activists think police's conduct may be regarded as revenge of the authorities for democratic activist's participation in an event organized by the OSCE.

Human rights defenders report that policemen already entered the flat and carry out a search looking for illegal printed materials.
