Former policeman who beat prisoners was put in Statkevich’s cell

On 16 February Maryna Adamovich received another letter from Mikalai Statkevich, sent from the prison in Mahilou.

The politician’s wife cited an excerpt from the letter for Radio Svaboda, in which he touches upon another, as she assumes, provocation against the political prisoner.

“On first, as I understood, they tried to put a new cell-mate in his cell, who was a former policeman. And there are a lot of complaints about him from other prisoners for beating them. “But the person did not stay here for long, he quickly sorted out the situation, excused himself for the mistake and asked to be released. And the key sentence that tensed me is the following: “I would not have written to you about this incident since I do not tell about all the cases of this kind. But they had already told me that they will look into this case when the boss returns from vacation. If they found me guilty of chocking this man or anything else, than I am probably a monster of some kind, considering his size and the special training”, - Maryna Adamovich told.

Maryna Adamovich reminded that a prisoner was put in Mikalai Statkevich’s cell before with whom he had a conflict and that affected his situation. Maryna Adamovich does not rule out new provocations against her husband because he refuses to sign a plea for pardon to Lukashenka: “About himself Mikalai wrote that he was fine. He now receives many letters, including responses to his letters. Iryna Khalip sent her response and told that it was only recently that she received his New Year’s congratulation which dated back to 23 December”.

A former presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich was sentenced to six years of imprisonment for organizing the protest meeting against the rigged presidential elections on 19 December 2010. The politician is serving the term in a prison in Mahilou, where he was transferred as a malicious regime violator from another colony.
