Maryna Adamovich: Claims about release of political prisoners are lie

The spouse of a former presidential candidate Mikalaj Statkevich does not believe in the readiness of official Minsk to release the political prisoners.

“The words of a possible release of the Belarusian political prisoners are another lie on the part of the regime. I do not deem necessary to comment on such statements. I believe deeds, but not these words about the readiness to buy and sell”, - Maryna Adamovich said in an interview to charter97.org.

Mikalaj Statkevich’s wife believes that Lukashenka will only release the political prisoners when the situation becomes critical for him.

“He will release them if it goes all bad. Let us wait. We will see what that is when there are real deeds. If they are ready to release, then why not today? Why cannot I meet my husband at home today? What other additional conditions must be fulfilled for that?”, - Maryna Adamovich asks.

She noted that it is not the first time that the authorities are trying to exchange empty promises of the release of the political prisoners for the assistance from the European Union.

“Apparently the political and economic situation in the country makes the regime give such promises. We have always spoken about that: political prisoners are hostages and a subject of a bargain. And what concerns the European Union, then it does not have a global strategy towards Belarus, that is why European politicians are trying again to make a deal with the authorities in some way. They still believe that it is possible”, - Mikalaj Statkevich’s wife said.

We would remind that there are still 13 political prisoners behind bars in Belarus. During his visit to Belarus the European Parliament delegation’s reporter Justas Paletskis claimed that the authorities “were ready to resolve the issues” of their release.
