Justas Paletskis: Dialogue is only possible after release of political prisoners

The reporter of the European Parliament’s delegation on Belarus believes that the release of political prisoners will be a signal for renewing contacts between Minsk and Brussels.

Justas Paletskis stated that in an interview to Radio Svaboda.

“A dialogue between the European Union and official Minsk is possible. But this can only happen after the release of the political prisoners”, - the MEP stated.

Justas Paletskis is going to finish the work on his report in two weeks. However already today he told about the main message of the report.

“I think we need to use the moment when both stakeholders – the European Union and official Minsk – send signals that there is a possibility to resume the dialogue. But, of course, this can only happen after the release of the political prisoners”, - the reported of the European Parliament’s delegation on Belarus said.

Justas Paletskis has told at which stage his report is now.

“It is moving forward. A big group of representatives of Belarusian opposition comes to Brussels next week. A big conference will take place at the European Parliament on the relations between the European Union and Belarus. I think that there will be an opportunity to grasp something useful. There are already ten pages of the reports prepared. But the text will need to be shortened – it must be no longer than four pages according to the rules of procedure”, - he said.

We would remind that the visit of the European Parliament delegation’s reporter on Belarus Justas Paletskis took place on 18-21 March. His negotiations with the Belarusian authorities and the claims about possible release of the regime’s prisoners were criticized by the opposition as well as by the relatives of the political prisoners.
