Stalin portrait returned to Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk

12

It was placed on the fence.

Works on dismantling the old building of the Great Patriotic War Museum have begun in the centre of Minsk. It remains unknown what will be built on this place. According to Radio Svaboda, the old building of the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War, designed by architects Georgy Zaborski and Georgy Benediktov, was erected in Kastrychnitakaya Square 50 years ago in 1964.

The museum moved to a new building near Hero City Minsk monument this summer.

The fencing around the building was covered with banners depicting sites of Minsk of the 20th century. One of them shows a statue of Stalin that stood in the square when Independence Avenue had the name Stalin Avenue. The 10-metre monument was opened in Minsk's central square in 1952. It was demolished in 1961 after Khrushchev launched the de-Stalinization campaign.

Unknown authors of the banners decided to remind Minsk resident about this fact.
