Gazprom cuts gas supplies to Ukraine

Russia’s Gazprom said on Monday it had reduced gas supplies to Ukraine after Kyiv missed an 0800 CET deadline to pay off its debts.

At a press conference, a spokesperson for the Russian gas exporter said Ukraine would have to pay up front for any future gas and that Kyiv had not paid for June supplies.

Sergei Kupriyanov added that they would continue supplies to Europe through Ukraine, Euronews reports.

“The volumes of gas designated for European consumers are flowing in full accordance with the contract’s figures, and Naftogaz Ukraine must stick to its contract to transit gas, and ensure the gas arrives uninterupted at its destination,” he said.

Moscow increased its tariffs after the ousting of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych.

The two countries failed to agree overnight on the price of future gas deliveries and a compromise put forward by the EU was rejected by Russia.
