The police can, if they want, find authors of an anonymous letter.
Viktar Statkevich, the father of political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich, and Mikalai's wife Maryna Adamovich filed a complaint to the police after Statkevich senior had received an anonymous letter with threats, Viasna human rights centre reports.
“The city police were glad to see us. They accepted our complaint. We were talking with a young policeman for two hours. I said that I returned from a walk and found the so called “St. George ribbon” on the door handle. I also found the insulting envelope in my mailbox. I showed that the return address reads 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant'. I said the content of the letter was insulting. Half of the text consisted of swear words. The letter begins with the words 'The Russian bear has woken up, whether you like it or not',” Viktar Statkevich said.
Statkevich senior, 80, thinks the letter was sent him to press on his jailed son, who refuses to apply to Lukashenka for a pardon.
Human rights activist Siarhei Housha, who visited Viktar Statkevich, noted the police can, if they want, find authors of the anonymous letter. Pensioners sit on benches in the yard, so they could see how the offenders entering the building. Neighbours and passers-by could see how they were tying the ribbon to the door handle. Let's see if the police will investigate it properly.”
