Arseniy Yatsenyuk: Absence of truce means martial law

The prime minister of Ukraine does not rule out the possibility of imposing martial law in case of resuming fire in the Donbas region.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk said it in an interview with TSN TV channel, RBC-Ukraine reports.

According to him, martial law is not needed as long as the ceasefire and the talk continue, the EU and the US support the peace plan and Russia implements it. “But if the truce ends in the same way as the previous truces ended, not only in Ukraine, there will be no other choice,” the PM said.

Yatsenyuk thinks the main advantage of martial law will be complete readjustment of the economy to a war footing, while the disadvantage is that western partners may take it as closing the channels to hold negotiations and look for a peaceful solution of the crisis. The trilateral contact group on Ukraine met in Minsk on Friday, September 5. The contact group on solving the Ukrainian conflict included representatives of Ukraine, Russia, the OSCE and terrorists.

The President of Ukraine signed an order on a ceasefire in Donbas on Friday.

Terrorists and Russian troops were reported yesterday to have violated the truce and fired at Ukrainian troops near Mariupol and on the outskirts of Donetsk.
