Johannes Hahn: The EU can't accept political prisoners in Belarus

The European Commissioner for Regional Policy made stipulations to the Belarusian authorities.

The European Union (EU) has the interest to establish well-structured and functional relations with Belarus, at the same time one cannot ignore the various aspects related to human rights in the country, Johannes Hahn, the European Commissioner for Regional Policy and the enlargement negotiations, told the agency BNS.

The EU can't accept political prisoners in Belarus.

"This is an aspect unacceptable for our understanding and freedom of religion. It certainly makes relation normalization more difficult. On the other hand, they are our neighbors, and I think they understand, it is good, if relations between neighbors are in balance", he said.

The EU is interested in good relations with its neighbors, as well as a peaceful international environment. However, the countries that border the EU must make decisions according to further relations with the EU.

In this situation, the EU also would understand how to develop relations with the country, Hahn emphasized.
