Alexievich Sent Ukrainian pilot Savchenko Her Books And Letter of Support

5

Sviatlana Alexievich named Nadezhda a Ukrainian Joan of Arc and expressed her hope for Nadezhda’s quick release from the prison.

December 2, the Nobel prize winner Sviatlana Alexievich handed over her books and a letter of support to the Embassy of Ukraine in Minsk so that they are sent to the Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, who is now tried in Russia, Nasha Niva reports.

The Nobel laureate noted that she had read the book by Savchenko, which Savchenko wrote while being kept in a Russian prison.

Nadezhda Savchenko passed her book “Strong Name Nadezhda” over to Sviatlana Alexievich on November 20.

It is to be recalled that Nadezhda Savchenko is a 34 years old Ukrainian military officer. She fought as a volunteer in the Aidar Battalion and was captured in Luhansk region on 24 of June, 2014. Savchenko says she was handed over to the Russian intelligence services; while the Russian side claims that she illegally crossed the Russian border on a voluntary basis.

She is accused of complicity in the June 17 killing of two Russian journalists, Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin, who died during a mortar attack outside Luhansk (the Ukrainian pilot was allegedly guiding the motor attack). Savchenko denies the charges. The Ukrainian is tried in Donetsk in the Rostov region of Russia.
