Stanislau Shushkevich: "Green men" are the only Lukashenka's way out

The Law "On Martial Law" violates the Constitution.

New amendments entered into force in the beginning of February. Against the background of the conflict in Ukraine, they have reinforced the sound of possible conflicts with military weapons on Belarusian territory, as well as Belarusian military involvement in conflicts abroad.

The amendments say that the military threat or attack may be the reason for imposing martial law. At the same time there is a possibility of imposing martial law when a threat of violation of constitutional order.

Statislau Shushkevich, the former Chairman of the Supreme Soviet and one of those signed the Belavezha Accords in December 1991, answered questions of camarade.biz on whether there are any military threats which Belarus faces, what may be the results of territorial disputes in the former USSR.

- After the collapse of the Soviet Union and further creation of the CIS, were there any talks on territorial claims?

- No, there were not as there were less idiots than now. Then everybody knew and remembered well Yalta Conference as well as post-war agreements and also they understood the importance of adhering to their borders.

And within the Union all borders were clearly defined. If someone does not like them, it would be better to find another way to assert themselves than to change borders by weapons.

–Did you foresee the conflict in Ukraine?

- No, I could not. It is hard to imagine that a professional spy would behave like a bandit. I thought he first would use his mind, but not force.

- Is Russia able to implement the Ukrainian scenario in Belarus?

- Yes, it is possible now. Putin may not resist. Russia's economy is going all to pieces Russian leadership has nothing but trade of oil. Therefore, everyone disputes about not how to develop industry and agriculture, but how to regulate financial flows and resolve financial issues.

In other words, they turned into bankers without possessing powerful enough financial means.

–Will there be a few problems with Ukraine for Russia?

- Yes, of course. It may turn out that Russia will not be satisfied with Ukraine only, because living conditions of Russians are getting worse. Perhaps, they will decide to continue asserting themselves by armed conflicts.

- Amendments to the law "On Martial Law" came into force since early February.

- This is a direct violation of the Constitution, rather than striving for neutrality within CSTO. It is not a legal state where everything is possible. This law meets interests of only one person.

- It is also told that particular amendments to this law are aimed to counter a possible appearance of "green men" in Belarus.

- I guess our lion's provider should adore them. They are his only hope in case of fair and free elections.

- Do you think it's possible for Lukashenka to confront Russia with weapons?

- No, I do not think so. It is totally impossible. It is just rhetoric. If you look through all his long interviews there you may see that their end counters to what is said in the beginning.

-Recently Lukashenka has stated that he is preparing the army to counter possible attacks against the country.

-This is pure idiocy. It's time to live like a civilized person, but not a barbarian.
