Kanstantyn Zhukouski: Flag on a house is a voluntary choice

Homel activist condemned initiative of authorities to force people to fly a national flag on a private house on holidays.

Barys Batura, former head of Mahileu region, and Mikhail Myasnikovich, Chairman of the "Council of the Republic" want to stimulate citizens to fly flags on national holidays. Homel activist Kanstantyn Zhukouski with a white-red-white flag on his home considers the initiative unacceptable. He told charter97.org.

"I consider such initiative an ordinary idiocy. It is further violation of the Constitution, rights and freedoms of the Belarusians. It is nonsense in the world. Even we had a white-red-white flag as an official one; we could not make people fly it. It is the choice of every person! He should fly the one he likes the most! The only thing that matters is him not to call for extremism, propagandize Nazism or communism symbols. In Ukraine they are banned by the law.

If a person flies a red-green flag, he proves he is a Belarusian, but not a conscious one. Because he just got an order. But, to some extent, it is good, because a person starts feeling like a Belarusian, not a Russian. And then he comes to the decision what a flag is his real and a historic one. It is good if only it is a voluntary choice. ", the activist states.
