Belarusian Delegation At United Nations Voted In Favor Of War In Syria

Belarus tried to derail the UN resolution aimed to end the fighting in Syria.

On December 9, the UN General Assembly voted for the resolution on the cessation of hostilities in Syria.

122 countries voted for the adoption of the document. 13 countries voted against the resolution, including Belarus, Russia, Iran, North Korea and Syria. Another 36 countries abstained, TASS reports. As a result, the document was adopted by a majority vote. Canada was the initiator of the resolution.

The resolution demands to cease all attacks on civilians and civilian targets in Syria, as well as to stop the siege of cities, including Aleppo. The General Assembly has demanded the cessation of all military operations in Syria and to provide the UN and its specialized agencies with secure, permanent and unhindered humanitarian access to needy Syrians, the UN News Center informs.

The authors of the resolution are in favor of early resumption of the official talks between the Syrian authorities and the opposition. The document notes that the forcible transfer of population in Syria may affect the demographic situation in the country.

The co-authors of the resolution consider it necessary to bring to justice those responsible for crimes committed in Syria, many of which can be qualified as war crimes or crimes against humanity.

The General Assembly called upon the UN Security Council to strive for overcoming the crisis in Syria, including the humanitarian one.
