Landsbergis About Belarusian NPP: Moscow Authorities Do Evil Using Others
VYTAUTAS LANDSBERGIS

Lukashenka follows the will of the Kremlin, which wants to revenge upon Lithuania for alleged collapse of the USSR, constructing a dangerous nuclear power plant.

65 thousand have been collected and handed over to the Seim in Lithuania. Signatures against the construction of nuclear power plant in Ostrovets. Former chairman of the Supreme Council of Lithuania Vytautas Landsbergis commented on the initiative and expressed his concerns about the Belarusian nuclear power plant in an interview to Belsat TV channel:

This is a kind of bill presentation, which, if there is a sufficient number of citizens' claims (50 thousand signatures), has to be considered by the Parliament. And the essence of the bill is that Lithuania evaluates the power plant project, which is located very close to the capital of our country, as dangerous for the state and the people. Lithuania refuses to purchase the energy to be when the station is built, and refuses to let this energy pass through their territory.

– Do you think that Belarus does not need the NPP?

– Perhaps Belarus needs it, but the location is not suitable and has been inhumanly chosen close to our capital, so it’s out of the question. There were a lot of other locations, and I know that the experts, including Belarusian ones, offered a location in Mahiliou region. But, apparently, there was a strong-willed order to put it here, on the border of Lithuania.

– What are your claims to Lukashenka as the ruler of Belarus in this situation?

–I do not think he's a self-directed head of the country. I think that perhaps he is not the kind of person to decide such things independently. He obviously received orders from above.

– If there is some kind of accident, what are the consequences for Lithuania?

– A major accident will mean that it is necessary to evacuate the capital Vilnius and a vast region not only in Lithuania, but in Belarus as well, together with its inhabitants. It will be unsuitable for living. In addition there is a threat of air and deep waters pollution, including the river Vilija.
