Expert: Lukashenka Heading For No Europe

The Belarusian authorities do not understand the Western values.

Political scientist Andrei Parotnikau has predicted how the relations between Belarus and the West will develop in 2017. The expert has explained why we shouldn’t expect anything “revolutionary and groundbreaking” in this field.

— The Belarusian authorities do not understand the West or Western values,— Parotnikau has said in a conversation with the RFI. — Let us be serious here, they are heading for no Europe and no West either.

It’s all just empty words aiming at, firsthand, expanding the field for a political maneuver, and secondly, at getting extra financial resources in the form of direct support, credit support or investments. Plus, they want access to the European markets. Nothing more. All sides realize this, and Europe sees it clearly.

The second moment is – the EU has no time for Belarus today. Numerous domestic problems, the upcoming presidential election in France, a governmental crisis in Italy, an unclear situation with the elections in Germany, how Brexit would go, and Trump’s position — Europe will be busy solving internal problems and the issues of preserving the trans-Atlantic unity. This is the agenda for the nearest two years — there will be no time for Belarus.
