Some European Parliament Members Call For Pause In Georgia's EU Candidacy Status

The crackdown on protests went beyond what was permitted.

More than 30 members of the European Parliament called on the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, to suspend Georgia's EU candidate status. SOVA reports this.

It is noted that, according to European deputies, attempts to silence peaceful demonstrators and use force in the process of adopting the Russian analogue of the law on foreign agents, initiated by the Georgian Dream, went beyond what was permitted.

“This behavior has further increased tension and polarization in Georgian politics and society,” the statement said.

MEPs point out that these actions contradict the 9 steps of the European Commission, and that this can no longer be ignored.

“We urge you to take a firm position and take appropriate measures that will send a clear signal to the Georgian government. The behavior of the Georgian government and the ruling Georgian Dream party contradicts the obligations of the EU candidate country. Accordingly, Georgia’s candidate status should be terminated without further progress towards accession,” the authors of the statement note.
